" On 16-18 July 2014 it will be 100 years since French aviator Maurice Guillaux (1883-1917) made the first air mail flight in Australia
. It was, however, another eight years before any sort of regular air mail service began, and then only on select regional routes. Guillaux's flight from Melbourne Agricultural Grounds to Moore Park in Sydney was made over two days, with seven stops en route and a flying time of just 91/4 hours.
Governor-General Sir Ronald Munro Ferguson and a crowd of excited spectators welcomed Guillaux as he touched down in Sydney on what was at the time the longest air mail flight worldwide.
The stamp designs in this issue are based on Kevin McKay's watercolour "sketches" for the 1964 commemorative issue for Australia's first air mail. His illustrations also appear on this cover and the card inside.
This postal and numismatic cover is limited to 8,000. The coin is Tuvalu legal tender."
